How to narrow a business name search, filter by filter
Common names match many businesses. Each filter below takes out a slice of the list, so use the ones that match what you already know.
Type the name you have
Start with the most distinctive words from the sign, invoice or website. A shorter search catches small spelling differences, then the filters do the narrowing.
Add the postcode
If you know where the business works, add its postcode. Each result shows a location, so you can compare it with the address on the invoice or quote.
Or choose the state
Don't know the postcode? Pick the state instead. It's the quickest way to drop matches from the other side of the country.
Filter by ABN status
Show active ABNs to see businesses trading under a current number. Include cancelled ones if you're looking into an older invoice.
Pick the entity type

- Why do I get so many matches?
- A business name search covers the whole country, and many names share the same few words. Start with the most unusual word in the name, then add a postcode or state. Entity type and GST registered only usually finish the job.
- Why is the person's name hidden or different?
- A sole trader's ABN belongs to the person, so the legal name is their own name, not the name on the van. Some records also carry less detail than others. We show what the public register data includes, so if a detail is missing, it wasn't in the data we received.
- Can two businesses share a name?
- Two names can look the same or almost the same and still belong to different entities, often in different states. A small spelling change, an extra word or a different entity type can separate them. Compare the location and entity type on each result before you pick one.
- Is a business name the same as a company?
- No. A company is a type of entity, registered with ASIC, with its own nine digit ACN. A business name is a name an entity trades under. A company can hold business names, and so can a sole trader, a partnership or a trust.
- Can I find an ABN by business name?
- Yes. Type the name into the checker, narrow the list, then open the record that fits. The result shows the formatted ABN, its status and the date it took effect, GST registration, entity type, location and registered business names.
- Where does the data come from?
- Australian Business Register ABN data and ASIC company and business names data, released by the Australian Government under the Creative Commons Attribution licence. Each result names its source and when it was retrieved. We're an independent site, not part of any of those agencies.
