Check if a business is registered for GST before you pay
Type the ABN from the invoice and we'll show whether the business is registered for GST and the date it started, so you can see if the GST you're being charged lines up.

A GST total from an unregistered supplier deserves a question
The invoice adds GST, yet the result for that ABN reads 'Not registered for GST'. Ask about the gap before the money leaves your account.
There can be plain reasons. The invoice may carry the wrong ABN, the GST registration may sit under a different entity, or the supplier's invoice template may be out of date.
Ask the supplier which ABN their GST registration sits under. Then confirm with the ATO or your accountant before you pay or claim the GST amount.
We don't decide whether an invoice is right. We show what the register shows, so your question to the supplier starts from a fact, not a hunch.

What our GST registration check gives you
One search box, one clear result. These are the parts of the checker that matter most when you're holding a supplier's invoice.
One box, three ways in
Type an ABN, a company's ACN or a business name. The same search box handles all three.
Filter to GST registered only
Searching a common name? Narrow it by postcode, state, ABN status, entity type and GST registered only.
See Filter to GST registered only
Typos caught as you type
We check the check digits while you type and tell you when a number cannot be a real ABN or ACN.
A fuller record when you need it
Open any result for the fuller record behind it, including the business names registered to that ABN.
A source line on every result
Each result names the register it came from and when it was retrieved, ready to note against the invoice.
Free, with no account
Use it as often as your accounts need. There's nothing to sign up for.
Check if a business was registered for GST on the invoice date
Your invoice has an issue date. The result has a GST start date. Read them in this order and you'll know what to ask.
Free, no account.
Find the invoice issue date
A tax invoice must show the date it was issued. Note it before you search, because that's the date you'll compare against.
Read the GST line on the result
Look for the date GST registration started for that ABN, or the words 'Not registered for GST'.
Registered before the invoice date
The registration started on or before the day the invoice was issued. On the register, the GST on that invoice lines up with the supplier's status.
Registered after the invoice date
The invoice is older than the registration. Ask the supplier about GST charged before their start date, and check the position with the ATO or your accountant.
No start date at all
The register holds no GST registration for that ABN. Ask the supplier about the GST amount before you pay that part of the invoice.
Keep a note of what you saw
Record the date you checked. Each result carries its source and retrieval date, so you can show exactly what the register said that day.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I check if a business is registered for GST?
- Type the ABN, the company's ACN or the business name into the search box on our checker. The result shows the GST line, with the date registration started or 'Not registered for GST'. It's free and you don't need an account.
- Can a business charge GST if it is not registered?
- We can't rule on a particular invoice. What we can show you is whether the ABN on it is registered for GST and from what date. If GST is charged and the register shows no registration, ask the supplier, then confirm the position on the ATO website or with your accountant.
- Can I claim GST credits on that invoice?
- That depends on rules we can't apply to your situation, so ask your accountant or check the ATO website. Have the facts ready: the GST line on the result, the start date, the invoice date and whether the invoice shows the details a tax invoice must carry.
- What does 'registered from' mean?
- It's the date the business's GST registration took effect on the register. If the invoice is dated earlier than that, the GST on it was charged before the registration began, which is worth raising with the supplier.
- Why might a small business not be registered for GST?
- The ATO sets the line: registration is required once a business's GST turnover reaches a year, or for a non-profit. A business trading below that may not have registered. That's a status, not a problem, as long as its invoices don't add GST. Check the current threshold on the ATO website.
- Is a result advice?
- No. It's a check of public register records, and each result names its source and retrieval date. Treat it as a starting point for your question, and take tax decisions to the ATO or your accountant.
